Marilena Delli Umohoza

Her name is Marilena, but in her books she signs by adding Umuhoza, “comforter” in kinyarwanda. This is the name given to her by her mother and that the municipality refused to register. Thirty years later, the same thing happened with his daughter, to whom – still her mother – she had given the name of Umutoni, “the favourite”.

Her story is written in the racism and love of the land where she was born, Italy. Her mother, Rwandan, survived three genocides and her father, from Bergamo, was a former missionary who voted Lega Nord. She enclosed the stories of her family in a mémoir, Razzismo all’italiana – cronache di una spia mezzosangue and in her latest novel Negretta – Baci Razzisti.

Marilena is also a photographer and director. For nearly twelve years, she has worked with street musicians from the world’s least represented countries along with her husband, producer Ian Brennan.
